This compact, heavy-duty saw handles firewood and shelter poles in an emergency, or on trips where every gram and every inch of pack space counts. It coils down small enough to live permanently in a kit bag, belt pouch or survival tin, adding next to no weight to your pack.

It is best treated as a reliable back-up cutting tool rather than your main saw. Experienced bushcrafters keep one in their emergency kit, while newcomers will find it an inexpensive first step towards a proper survival kit. For regular firewood processing at camp, a folding saw remains the quicker option.

FAQs

Are wire saws any good for bushcraft?

Yes, as a lightweight back-up. A wire saw cuts more slowly than a folding saw and takes more effort, but it weighs very little and takes up almost no space, which makes it ideal for emergency and survival kits.

How do I stop a wire saw from snapping?

Keep the wire taut and use long, steady strokes through the full length of the saw. Avoid kinking it or pulling at sharp angles, and do not rush; fast strokes build up heat and weaken the wire.

Can I cut larger logs with a wire saw?

It works best on limbs up to around wrist thickness. For larger pieces, two people can work it from either end, or you can bend a green sapling into a bow and tie the saw across it to make a simple bow saw.
