3 Improvised Survival Hacks That May Come In Handy

1. Ring pull fishing hook

If you have (or can find) an old tin can, you can use the ring pull as an improvised fishing hook. Find a way to cut it, perhaps using a multitool to snip one half of the ring pull open, then bend it around and sharpen it to a point. Attach a spare line, or whatever you can improvise a line from, to the loop and you have your improvised fishing hook.

2. Water Collection

Water is at the top of the list when you are in a survival situation. Provided that it's raining, there is an easy method of collecting clean drinking water: it only involves using the waterproof fabric from your shelter or gear and a container. Either find or create a sloping edge out of your available waterproof fabrics and place the container at the bottom. Rainwater will land on the waterproof fabric, but it won't be absorbed - instead, it will be funnelled down the slope you created and collected in the container. Even with a light drizzle, you can collect a decent amount of drinking water using the method.

Pictured here is a great example of how this method can be set up, using only a tarp and a water bottle. All they need now is more appropriate weather!

3. Natural Mosquito repellent

Burning natural herbs can really help to keep mosquitoes away - if you can find Mint, Pine needles or Thyme. It has been proven that burning these herbs releases scents into the air that puts off the little buzzy pests. Peppermint is especially good in humans as well for clearing your nasal passages - two uses in one!
