UK Emergency Kit & Supplies

133 products

The UK government's Be Ready campaign asks every household to have enough supplies to manage for 3 days (72 hours) if an emergency such as a power cut, flood or severe storm disrupts everyday life. This collection brings together the items on the government's checklist that we stock, so you can build or top up your home emergency kit in one place.

What the government recommends

  • Light: a torch and spare batteries. Torches are safer than candles, so choose from our headtorches, rechargeable torches and battery or solar lanterns.
  • Warmth: blankets, sleeping bags and warm clothing. Homes cool quickly when the heating goes off.
  • Power: a charged power bank for phones and compatible medical devices.
  • Water: 3 litres per person per day for drinking. Our water carriers make it easy to keep a supply at home.
  • Food: long-life food that needs no fridge or cooking, such as nuts and dried fruit.
  • Hygiene: hand sanitiser, wipes and bathroom products.
  • First aid: a first aid kit or first aid items, plus any essential medication.
  • Documents: printed copies of important documents, kept safe and dry.

The full checklist also covers a battery or wind-up FM radio, cash, and baby and pet supplies. For winter driving, the government suggests keeping a torch, warm clothes, blankets, food and drink and a shovel in your car boot.

Build your kit over time

You don't need to buy everything at once. Start with what you already have at home, add missing items when you can, and check expiry dates and batteries every six months. You can read the full checklist on the government's Be Ready website.

FAQs
UK Emergency Kit & Supplies

FAQs

What should be in a UK government emergency kit?

The government's Be Ready checklist asks for 3 days of supplies: bottled water, long-life food that needs no cooking, a torch with spare batteries, a battery or wind-up FM radio, a charged power bank, blankets and warm clothing, a first aid kit and any essential medication. It also lists hygiene items, some cash, and printed copies of important documents and phone numbers. Add baby and pet supplies if your household needs them.

What is the Be Ready campaign?

Be Ready is the UK government's campaign to help households prepare for emergencies. It asks people to have enough supplies to manage for 3 days, and its free checklist is on the Be Ready website at beready.campaign.gov.uk.

Why is the government asking people to prepare an emergency kit?

Emergencies such as severe weather and cyber attacks can disrupt the power, water and other services we rely on. The government says being ready for 3 days helps you manage while support reaches those who need it most.

How much water should I store for an emergency in the UK?

The government recommends 3 litres of drinking water per person per day for 3 days, which is 9 litres each. You will need more for cooking and washing. A water carrier makes it easier to keep a supply at home.

What food should I keep in an emergency kit?

Choose long-life food that does not need a fridge or cooking, such as tinned meat, fish or vegetables, dried fruit and nuts. The government suggests buying food you would usually eat, and checking expiry dates every six months.

What should I have ready for a power cut?

Keep a torch with spare batteries, as torches are safer than candles. A charged power bank keeps your phone going, and a battery or wind-up radio gives you news updates. Blankets and warm clothing help too, because homes cool quickly when the heating goes off. Write down the power cut number, 105 in England, Scotland and Wales, in case your phone runs flat.

What is a 72-hour emergency kit?

It is a kit with enough supplies to last 3 days (72 hours), which is what the UK government's Be Ready checklist recommends. You do not need to buy everything at once. Build it up gradually and check it every six months.
