Wild camping myths debunked

If you’re new to the idea of wild camping, you might be wondering what it’s all about, and how it differs from the usual camping. In order to get your facts right, here are some common wild camping myths to avoid.

You can camp anywhere

There’s often the idea that with wild camping you can pitch up your tent anywhere you like. This isn’t strictly the case. You’ll need permission from a landowner if you wild camp in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. The rules are less strict in Scotland, although you’ll still need to adhere to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, which means that you must be responsible, respect the environment and the interests of others.

Bear in mind also that you aren’t allowed to just pitch up outdoors in nature reserves or national parks, with the exception of Dartmoor National Park in Devon.

Wild camping is only for the hardcore

Contrary to what you might think, you don’t have to be a hardcore camper to enjoy the benefits of wild camping. As long as you’ve got the right camping equipment, you’ll enjoy the feeling of really connecting with nature that wild camping brings. It’s also a great opportunity to put those bushcraft and foraging skills into good use!

You don’t have to follow rules like at normal campsites

Just because you’re not staying within the confines of an organised campsite, doesn’t mean to say that you can do exactly what you want when wild camping. While you might not have a list of dos and don’ts put under your nose when pitching up your tent, it’s still important to respect the land and follow the Countryside Code. It goes without saying that you shouldn’t leave any litter or trace of your stay behind. When it comes to outdoor cooking, never light a fire unless you’ve gained permission from a landowner. Camp in small groups, away from areas of wildlife or livestock, and don’t outstay your welcome.

There’ll be too much to carry

Going wild camping doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have to be weighed down by an enormous, heavy backpack. These days, it’s easy to find lightweight camping gear and camp cooking equipment that are compact and easy to fit into a pack. Seek quality gear from a reputable camping provider and you’ll be amazed at just how much you can squeeze into your backpack, without feeling overburdened.
